McKenzie Varsity Sports Schedule This Week


The McKenzie Varsity Basket-ball programs are off this week and through the first of the year. Basketball picks up again on January 2 as both teams participate in the annual 1A Hoops Classic held at Portland Lutheran. The Varsity Wrestling program resumes on December 28 at the Myrtle Point Wrestling Tournament held on the South Coast.


Eagle Ladies Earn Second League Victory Over Indians


McKenzie easily defeated an over-matched Mohawk Varsity girls team last Wednesday, December 18, winning 69-4. The Indians were unable to score until the fourth quarter. The Eagles scored 26 pts. in the first quarter and added 24 pts. in the second quarter to lead 50-0 at the half time break. McKenzie tallied 15 pts. in the third period and both teams finished the game with 4 pts. each in the final quarter. Senior post Makaila Hiddleston led all players with 21 pts. Hiddleston added 5 rebounds and 1 steal. Senior wing Shyla Harlan scored 11 pts. while stealing the ball 4 times. Junior Buggy Hiddleston also scored in double figures as she tallied 10 pts. and contributed 6 assists. Sophomore Jorden Smith, working at the point, stole the ball 9 times while adding 7 pts. Other Eagles scoring were Katey Totten with 7 pts. and 4 rebounds, Aly Mathews with 6 pts., Kailyn Ringler with 4 pts. and 4 rebounds, and Isabella Espinoza, who scored 3 pts.

McKenzie Boys Team Outlasts Mapleton 30-22, Downs Mohawk, 53-43

The Eagles improved their early season record to 2-0 as they defeated the visiting Indians last Wednesday evening, December 18. McKenzie defeated Mapleton 30-22 last Monday, December 16. Head Coach Galen Scrivner lamented the slow, sloppy effort by the Eagles citing missed practices and 5 canceled games due to the recent snow weather. Fortunately for visiting McKenzie, senior Bailey Adams was a spark as he led his team with 23 pts. and 12 rebounds, the latter stat a personal record.

Against   Mohawk,   Adams  recorded a double-double as he led all scorers with 19 pts. while hauling down 17 rebounds, resetting his previous best versus Mapleton. With the Eagles easily in control by 20 at the end of three quarters, all hands on deck were able to see action. Junior post Alex Nastasiuk “played a strong inside game with 5 blocked shots and 15 pts.”, according to Coach Scrivner. Junior guard Eric Huffman and sophomore forward Drew Hamlow added 8 pts. apiece. Coach Scrivner also praised Huffman for his defensive production.


McKenzie Varsity Girls Split, Varsity Boys Drop Two at North Douglas Tournament


The Eagle Girls lost their Tour-nament opener to host North Douglas, 27-42, last Friday, December 20. The team rebounded the following afternoon versus Elkton, who lost to Yoncalla 35-45, defeating the Elks soundly 42-28 for the split on the road. In the first contest, McKenzie led at the halftime break 15-14 but North Douglas opened up the game by outscoring the visitors 15-8 in the third period to retake the lead and polished off the win by outpointing the Eagles 14-4 in the final quarter. Makaila Hiddleston led her team with 11 pts. and 5 rebounds. Buggy Hiddleston dropped in 8 pts. before fouling out of the game, Katey Totten and Shyla Harlan each added 4 pts., which completed the Eagles scoring. Harlan also grabbed 5 rebounds and Jorden Smith recorded 5 assists. The following day, McKenzie started off slow, trailing in both the first two periods (13-16 at the half) but fired up in the second half to take the lead and secure the victory. McKenzie led 29-23 at the end of the third quarter and outscored the Elks 13-5 in the final period. Buggy Hiddleston led all scorers with 24 pts. and 9 rebounds. Makaila Hiddleston scored 12 pts. with 4 rebounds, Shyla Harlan added 4 pts. and handed out 5 assists, and Jorden Smith scored the other 2 Eagle pts. The McKenzie girls team finished out the week with a 2-1 Mt. West League record and a 3-2 overall record.

The McKenzie boys team fared not so well as they fell to the host team North Douglas Warriors 52-29 in the first game on Friday, December 20. The next day, the Elkton Elks also defeated McKenzie by the score of 42-28. At the end of the week the Eagle boys team were 2-1 in Mt. West League play and have a 2-3 overall record.
