Vida Cafe Fire2Vida: The landmark Vida Cafe was extensively damaged in an early morning blaze today. According to McKenzie Fire & Rescue reports, the fire was reported at 4:22 a.m. on October 24th, coming from the rear of the structure.

On arrival responders found the most active fire was coming from the East end of the building, and the exterior part of the fire was extinguished quickly. In order to find all the active fire inside the building crews needed to remove a large portion of the ceiling and make several access points in the walls.

October 20, 1926, could easily have been the day Mrs. M.D. Lewis died — suddenly, silently and violently.
She was doing some work around a small house she had for sale in the Sellwood neighborhood of Portland when an old car pulled up in front of it and a small man with black hair and dark complexion stepped out. Rude and brusque, he beetled into the house as if he owned it, muttering, “House for sale” as he passed her.

Hood River Japenese gardenTucked away in a corner of a public garden in Hood River, the Japanese Heritage Garden offers an unexpected place of quiet reflection.
The site, maintained by Master Gardeners who were trained by the Oregon State University Extension Service, incorporates the scenic vistas of hills and orchards, which were worked by the first generation of Japanese immigrants to the Hood River Valley in the early 1900s.
An old Norway spruce tree surrounded by raked gravel forms a centerpiece. A six-foot Nishinoya-style lantern sits at the entrance. Benches and stone-paved pathways guide visitors.
