McKenzie Varsity Sports Schedule This Week


McKenzie’s Varsity Track and Field teams and McKenzie Community Track and Field will co-host the 1A-Special District 5 Mt. West District Championships this Saturday, May 17. The event will be held at the Aaron and Marie Jones Community Track. Field events will start at 12:00 pm. and Run events will start at 2:00 pm. Mt. West teams competing are Alsea, Crow, Eddyville, Lowell, Mapleton, McKenzie, Mohawk, Siletz Valley, and Triangle Lake.


Mt. West Athletes Look To Improve Top Ten Season Marks


The 1A-SD 5 Mt. West League District Championship this Saturday will feature several Mt. West League athletes who have 2014 Top 10 Class 1A event marks thus far. Austin McNichols of Lowell has this season’s State 1A best mark in the 110 meter hurdles with a 15.31 second time and holds the State best in the pole vault with a cleared height of 13 feet 6 inches. The talented multi-event athlete also has a State 2nd best in the 300 meter hurdles with a 41.49 second time. McKenzie’s Alex Nastasiuk is ranked 5th in the 300 meter hurdles with a 43.29 second time. Mohawk’s Gage Corrigan has the State’s 1A best effort in the shot put, having thrown the implement 46 feet 5.5 inches. Corrigan also owns the 2nd best discus throw in the classification with a toss of 128 feet 9 inches. Crow’s Brennan Johnson is currently first in the high jump at 6 feet 1 inch and Cody Wilson of Mohawk has the 1A State 2nd best mark in the long jump with a mark of 20 feet 6 inches. Amber Von Essen of Crow is the 1A State leader in the 200 meter race with a time of 27.41 seconds and the Triangle Lake 4X100 relay team holds the 1A State best time of 53.73 seconds. McKenzie’s Mikaila Hiddleston is currently 8th in the Girl’s shot put event with a season best mark of 33 feet even and senior teammate Shyla Harlan has the 10th best effort in the 800 meter run timed at 2:40.69 minutes.


2A/1A Special District 4 Baseball


2A/1A Special District 4 baseball wraps up the regular season schedule this week with the State’s 2nd ranked team, Monroe, certainly in the driver’s seat to claim the League’s regular season championship. Toledo, ranked 8th, sits solidly in 2nd place. Battling for third place is Siletz Valley, Lowell/Mohawk/McKenzie and Oakridge. With all three teams facing the top two teams and barring an upset, Siletz Valley appears to hold a slim advantage on Lowell/Mohawk/McKenzie for the third spot as they have defeated the Red Devils twice earlier this season.

Eagle Girls Results at Regis Twilight Meet

McKenzie’s Varsity Boys and Girls Track and Field teams participated at the annual Regis Twilight Meet last Friday, May 9. The meet featured twenty-five 1A thru 4A classification teams from throughout the Willamette Valley. The Eagle’s Mikaila Hiddleston earned the highest finish on the day with a 6th place mark in the shot put. Hiddleston tossed the shot 32-04.00 feet. Teammate Breanna Van Pernis had a 29th place effort in the event with a toss of 22-00.00 feet. Alisha Clark, Santiam, won the shot put with a throw of 34-09.00 feet. Hiddleston also placed 13th in the javelin event, throwing the implement 81-08 feet. Van Pernis followed in 33rd place with a throw of 45-08 feet. The javelin was won by Sheila Limas, Blanchett Catholic, at 127-05 feet. McKenzie’s Idgie Glynn tied for 12th in the pole vault, clearing 6-00.00 feet. Kennedy’s Madison Sprauer won with a cleared height of 8-04.00 feet. Glynn finished 16th in the high jump with a mark of 4-00.00 feet and that event was won by Loghan Sprauer, Kennedy, who cleared the bar at 5-00.00 feet. Glynn also ran the 100 meter hurdles and clocked a 19th place time of 20.22 seconds. The 100 meter race was won by Hannah Waite, North Marion, with a time of 16.02 seconds. The Eagle’s Shyla Harlan jumped 12-09.00 feet in the long jump, good for 14th place, and she was followed in 26th place by teammate Isabella Espinoza, with a legal jump of 10-00.00 feet. The long jump was won by Dayton’s Sydney Mohler with a leap of 15-01.00 feet. Harlan ran 31.16 seconds and 16th place in the 200 meter race and 21st in the 400 meters, timed in 1:11.82 minutes. The 200 meters was won by Natalie Legres, Scio, with a time of 26.76 seconds and the 400 meters was taken by L. Sprauer, Kennedy, in 1:01.06 minutes. Espinoza finished 28th in the 1500 meter run timed in 7:12.81 minutes and was followed by Eagle teammate Cynthia Harlan, who ran the race in 8:04.11 minutes and a 29th place finish. Other Twilight event winners were Mikayla Cortez, Scio, in the 100 meters, timed in 13.43 seconds, Makenzee Cleveland, Valley Catholic, in the 800 meters, finishing in 2:20.92 minutes, Katey Harris, Dayton, in the 3000 meter run, with a time of 11:21.66 minutes, H. Waite, North Marion, in the 300 meter hurdles, timed in 46.57 seconds, Maddie Shirley, Dayton, in the discus, with a throw of 123-00 feet, team Valley Catholic in the 4X100 relay timed in 50.46 seconds, and team Westside Christian in the 4X400 relay, timed in 4:16.07 seconds.


McKenzie’s Boys Results at Regis Twilight


McKenzie’s Alex Nastasiuk led his team’s efforts at the Regis Twilight Meet with an 8th place finish in the 300 meter hurdles. Nastasiuk was timed in 44.81 seconds and was followed by teammate Trevor Spray in 27th place with a time of 52.87 seconds. The 300 meter hurdles was won by Sean Kounovsky, timed in 41.62 seconds. Nastasiuk placed 18th in the 100 meter race with a time of 12.29 seconds and teammate Bailey Adams followed in 30th, with a time of 12.94 seconds. The 100 meter race was won by Pieter Top, Gervais, who ran the event in 11.45 seconds. In the javelin, Nastasiuk also recorded his team’s highest finish with a throw of 115-00 feet, good for 19th. Spray followed in 46th place with a 71-05 feet effort. Adams ran 2:17.17 minutes in the 800 meter run, a 22nd place finish, and the event was won by Christian Parr, North Marion, in 1:59.63 minutes. Adams also claimed 20th in the long jump, leaping 17-02.50 feet, following winner Makik Knott, Colton, who jumped 20-00.00 feet. The Eagle’s Spray finished 38th in the discus with a 65-04 feet throw and that event was won by East Linn Christian’s Blake Warren, who threw the discus 133-00 feet. McKenzie’s Drew Hamlow ran to an 11th place finish in the 400 meters with a time of 56.82 seconds and teammate Jeff Bayer was timed in 59.19 seconds and finished 21st. Hamlow also finished 21st in the 200 meters with a time of 26.60 seconds and Bayer placed 24th timed in 27.15 seconds. Other Boy’s event winners in the Twilight Meet were Zach Bellews, Creswell, in the 1500 meter run, timed in 4:09.16 minutes, Luca Ostertag-Hill, Catlin Gabel, in the 3000 meter run, with a time of 9:26.60 minutes, S. Kounovsky, Kennedy, in the 110 meter hurdles, finishing in 16.54 seconds, Blanchett Catholic’s Jeff Lieder in the shot put with a throw of 47-05.00 feet, Oliver Meyr, Central Linn, in the high jump, clearing the bar cleanly at 5-08.00 feet, Lucas Stiff Arm, Catlin Gabel, in the triple jump, with a mark of 41-04.00 feet, Corey Sledge, Culver, in the pole vault, who cleared at 13-00.00 feet, team Central Linn in the 4X100 meter relay with a time of 44.78 seconds, and team Westside Christian, finishing in 3:34.04 minutes in the 4X400 meter relay.


Middle School Mt. West District Championships


McKenzie Middle School and the McKenzie Community Track and Field co-hosted the Mt. West League Middle School District Track and Field Championships last Saturday, May 10. The event was held at the Aaron and Marie Jones Community Track venue. Events were structured into Varsity (7th and 8th grade) and Junior Varsity (5th and 6th grade) age groups. Triangle Lake won the Varsity Boys meet, scoring 155 pts. and Lowell finished second with 84 pts. McKenzie finished 7th with 7 pts. In the Boys Junior Varsity meet, Lowell won with 161 pts. followed by Triangle Lake with 141 pts. McKenzie finished 6th with 6 pts. In the Varsity Girls meet, Crow won with 161.5 pts. followed by second place Alsea with 81 pts. McKenzie finished 4th with 74 pts. Alsea won the Girls Junior Varsity meet with 165 pts, Lowell was 2nd with 101 pts. and McKenzie was 4th with 28 pts. McKenzie’s Casey Watkins, competing in the Boys Varsity meet, placed 3rd in the javelin, 5th in the discus and 8th in the shotput. Teammate River Bloomer, competing in the Boys Junior Varsity meet, recorded a 3rd in the javelin, 5th in the shot put, and 5th in the javelin. The Eagle’s Varsity Girls 4X200 meter relay team, comprised of Jade Hayes, Kanyen Kamrath, Anna McNutt, and Naomi Satchell won that event and the same team racing in the 4X100 meter relay placed 3rd. Satchell also won the Varsity 800 meter run and placed 2nd in the Varsity long jump. McNutt finished 3rd in her Varsity 400 meter race. Kamrath finished 3rd in the Varsity high jump and 6th in the Varsity 100 meter high hurdles. Hayes collected a 3rd in the Varsity 800 meter run, a 4th finish in the Varsity high jump, and a 4th place in the Varsity 100 meter high hurdles. Cassidy Campbell ran for 3rd place in the Varsity 200 meter race and Chloe Erdahl threw the Varsity javelin for a 4th place finish. The Eagles Danny Melcher ran to 2nd place in the Junior Varsity 800 meter run and also placed 5th in the JV long jump. Her teammate, Lola Seiler, finished 4th in the JV javelin and placed 6th in the JV shot put.

Sarah Dean Breaks PSU 1,500 Meter Record, Qualifies for NCAA Prelims

McKenzie Alumni Sarah Dean (Hanchett) recently broke the Portland State University record in the 1,500 meters. Dean, a senior majoring in environmental science at PSU, established the new mark with a time of 4:22.30 minutes, erasing the old mark held by Bianca Morten. Dean’s outstanding race came in the recent Oregon Twilight Meet held last Friday, May 9, at Hayward Field and her time was over six seconds better than her previous personal best. Her mark also ranks her 31st in the NCAA West region. The former McKenzie Eagle standout now owns two PSU records, having reset the indoor mile standard (4:51.32 minutes) in February at the UW Invitational. Next on the schedule for the talented Viking is the Big Sky Outdoor Championships held in Flagstaff, Arizona on Wednesday, May 14 and then on to the NCAA West Preliminary Meet held in Fayetteville, Arkansas on May 29-31. Dean has also been recognized as a Big Sky All Academic Athlete.
