McKenzie Varsity Sports Schedule This Week

The Eagle Varsity Volleyball team will host the Mohawk Indians this Wed., Oct. 9 with a JV match scheduled to start at 4:30 pm., followed by the Varsity match at 6:00 pm. McKenzie will honor it’s Volleyball Seniors and their Parents at the event. The next afternoon, the Varsity Team will travel to Alsea to participate in a three-way match with the Wolverines and the Siletz Valley Warriors. The Eagles will match up with Siletz Valley, starting at 4:30 pm. McKenzie will play host Alsea in the second match scheduled for 6:00 pm. Friday, Oct. 11, the Eagle Varsity Football team will host the Mapleton Sailors with kick-off slated for 7:00 pm. McKenzie’s Cross Country Runners will travel to Elijah Bristow State Park near host school Pleasant Hill to compete in the Rock n River 5K Meet. The Varsity Boys race will start at 9:30 am. and the Varsity Girls race will start at 10:15 am.

Ayshia Seiler Earns State Volleyball Honor

McKenzie’s setter, Ayshia Seiler, earned the Oregon Volleyball Player of the Week Award for the week of 9-30 to 10-06-13 given by the American Volleyball Coaches Association and Maxpreps (a national organization covering high school sports). The coveted award covers all Oregon high school classifications, from 1A through 6A. AVCA and Maxpreps recognize one player from each State weekly. Seiler, a 5’5” senior earned the high distinction due to her play over the past 10 matches in which she accumulated 93 assists (an avg. of 9.3/match), 14 service aces, 13 digs, 3 kills, and 1 service received. Due to her outstanding setting, the Eagle team had a very fine .278 hitting percentage in the same matches. Congratulations to Ayshia, her teammates and Coaching Staff.

McKenzie Clobbers Cougars

McKenzie started the evening off slowly, spotting the visiting Crow Cougars the first set of the Mt. West League match, losing 19-25. When the Eagles got their game face on in the second set they handily won 25-11 and rolled on to win the next two sets 25-18 and 25-19. The match victory kept McKenzie on pace with the Mapleton Sailors for the second place in the League standings. The Eagle’s dynamic Hiddleston duo, Buggy and Makaila, led the charge as Buggy hit for 17 kills, recorded 13 digs and blocked the Cougars 4 times. Makaila mirrored her sister with 14 kills, 12 digs and 4 blocks of her own. Teammates Katey Totten and Ayshia Seiler turned in strong performances as well with Totten hitting for 7 kills, digging 13 times, and blocking 4 times and Seiler adding 41 assists, serving for 5 aces and adding 7 digs. Shyla Harlan had 15 digs and 5 kills in the match and Delphine Clark recorded 11 digs.

Eagles Triumph, Three-set Triangle Lake

The OSAA seventh ranked Eagle Varsity Volleyball Team defeated the visiting Lakers last Friday, Oct. 4, in three straight sets, 25-12, 25-15, and 25-23. With the win, McKenzie (9-2 League, 13-5 overall) remained one-half game behind nineteenth ranked Mapleton (10-2, 10-4) and one and one-half game behind sixth ranked Lowell (11-0, 18-3) in the Mt. West League standings with essentially one week left in the regular season. The Eagles senior setter Ayshia Seiler continued to set the pace for her team as she accumulated 32 assists in the match versus the Lakers. Seiler also had 3 aces, 5 digs, and an ace. Makaila Hiddleston delivered 19 kills with 6 digs and an ace. Shyla Harlan was credited with 17 digs plus 5 kills and 2 aces. Buggy Hiddleston added another 9 kills, 8 digs, and served 3 aces. Katey Totten was solid as she hit 5 kills, blocked twice, had 5 digs and served 2 aces. Delphine Clark added 12 digs and an ace as well. Clea Coach served an ace and had 2 digs, Alyda Mathews added 2 aces, and Tamera Satchell had 2 kills.

Lakers Lambaste Eagles 86-34

Senior Eagle quarterback Bailey Adams put up good numbers last Friday against the visiting Triangle Lake Lakers as did senior running back Casey Mitchell, sophomore receiver Drew Hamlow and junior receiver Alex Nastasiuk. In many games those stats would indicate a victory for the home team. Not on this particular evening as Triangle Lake left no doubt who was in control. The Lakers accumulated 471 yds. total rushing, not counting passing yds., offensively, while spending a good deal of the time in the Eagles backfield, recording 5 sacks and a safety. Currently McKenzie is 0-3 in League standings and 0-5 on the season overall. The OSAA sixth ranked Lakers improved to 3-0 and 5-0 and kept them in a tie with top ranked Lowell. Adams threw 12 completions out 26 attempts for 295 yds., scored 4 TDs while also throwing 2 interceptions, and losing 1 fumble. Hamlow hauled in 5 receptions for a total of 140 yds. and 3 TDs, accounting for 18 of his team’s 34 pts. Alex Nastasiuk also caught 5 Adam’s passes for 128 yds. and 1 TD. Eric Huffman had 2 pass receptions for 27 yds. Mitchell was the workhorse on the ground as he carried 25 times for 162 yds., one carry breaking for 57 yds. and 1 TD. Mitchell probably should be considered for the Ironman of the Year Award as he also accounted for a team high 9 tackles, 5 of which were solo. The senior also had 6 kickoff returns for an additional 53 yds. Nastasiuk had 5 total tackles, 3 solo, and Adams added 4 tackles, 3 solo. McKenzie’s next scheduled game is on the road with Mapleton, who is currently 1-2 in League play and 3-2 overall. The Sailors beat Crow 52-36, then lost to Triangle Lake 62-12 and Yoncalla 80-26. The Eagles have yet to play Crow (1-2, 4-2) and Yoncalla (2-1, 5-1).

McKenzie Mauls Mapleton Monday

McKenzie defeated visiting Mapleton last Monday, Oct. 7 in a pivotal Mt. West League match that saw the Eagles overtake the Sailors for second place in the League standings with one week left in the regular season. McKenzie won in three straight sets in an effort that seemed harder than the set scores indicated, 25-16, 25-13, and 25-13. Mapleton battled valiantly, but the Eagles seemed to have an answer every time the Sailors made a run. Makaila Hiddleston led her team with 10 kills, 3 aces, 3 blocks and 7 digs. Buggy Hiddleston had 11 kills, 2 aces, a block, and 5 digs. Ayshia Seiler, the Eagles AVCA/Maxpreps Oregon Volleyball Player of the Week, earned 22 assists to go with 1 kill, 5 aces, and 4 digs. Katey Totten added 5 kills, 10 digs and a block. Shyla Harlan also had 10 digs in the match plus 3 kills and an ace. Eagle’s Head Coach Dan Brenner singled out Harlan for her perfect 25 for 25 serving and overall play in the match. McKenzie rose to 4th in the OSAA State rankings following the victory.
