McKenzie Varsity Sports Schedule This Week


McKenzie’s Cross Country runners will travel to Elmira on Wed., Oct. 16, to participate in the Country Fair Classic. Varsity Girl’s race starts at 5:00 pm. and the Varsity Boy’s race starts at 5:30 pm. The Eagle’s Varsity Football Team hosts the Crow Cougars on Fri., Oct. 18 with kickoff slated for 7:00 pm. McKenzie’s Varsity Volleyball Team will travel to a neutral court in Bend on Monday, Oct. 21, for a scheduled three way non-league match with Condon/Wheeler at 3:00 pm. followed by a match with Trinity Lutheran at 6:00 pm. Condon/Wheeler is currently ranked 9th in the OSAA State Volleyball rankings and Trinity Lutheran is ranked at 7th. McKenzie is ranked at 6th at press time.


Eagle Ace Seiler Leads Team to Victory Over Mohawk


McKenzie easily dispatched the visiting Mohawk Indians last Wed., Oct. 9 in three straight sets, 25-11, 25-15, and 25-13. With the victory, McKenzie equaled its longest win streak of the 2013 season and remained in second place in the Mt. West League standings. The Eagles honored their six senior athletes and their parents at the last scheduled home match of the regular season. Those senior athletes are Clea Coach, Delphine Clark, Scout Hanchet, Shyla Harlan, Makaila Hiddleston, and Ayshia Seiler. Seiler set the pace for McKenzie as she served a team high 7 aces and had 32 assists. As a team, the Eagles had 22 aces on the evening. Makaila Hiddleston hit for 9 kills with 7 digs, Buggy Hiddleston had 8 kills, and Katey Totten hit 7 kills and blocked once. Clea Coach hit 5 kills and also served 3 aces, Delphine Clark had 5 digs and Tamera Satchell hit 3 kills.


McKenzie Doubles-Up, Deals a Pair of Aces


The Eagles revised schedule had the Varsity Volleyball Team traveling to Alsea for a rescheduled match with the Siletz Valley Warriors, immediately followed by a match with the host Alsea Wolverines. McKenzie defeated Siletz in three straight sets, 25-11, 25-7, and 25-16 and subsequently upended Alsea in another three straight sets, 25-12, 25-18, and 25-8. With the two victories, the Eagles moved to 13-2 in Mt. West League play and 17-5 overall, maintaining their hold on second place in the League standings. McKenzie once again was stellar at the serving line as the team served a total of 22 aces versus Siletz and 21 aces against Alsea. Ayshia Seiler had 10 aces herself against Siletz to go along with 26 assists and 1 kill. Buggy Hiddleston led her team with 15 kills and added 4 aces. Makaila Hiddleston hit for 8 kills and 5 aces. Katey Totten contributed 6 kills while Kailyn Ringler hit 2 kills and 2 aces. Tamera Satchell led the team with 4 digs plus added 1 kill and an ace. Clea Coach had the Eagle’s lone block and 3 digs and Delphine Clark had 2 digs.

In the later match with the Alsea Wolverines, McKenzie was led by Katey Totten with 13 kills, 2 aces, plus 1 block and Ayshia Seiler with 30 assists to go along with 3 aces. Makaila Hiddleston was superbly efficient at the line as she totaled 10 aces, 7 kills, 3 blocks, and 2 digs. Buggy Hiddleston hit for 7 kills, 4 aces, and 4 digs. Tamera Satchell added 3 kills, Alyda Mathews hit 2 kills, Katey Totten served 2 aces and a block, Delphine Clark led the team with 6 digs and Kailyn Ringler added one block.


Eagles Delivered to Heartbreak Hotel in a Ford Taxi


Two Fords, not Henry nor Edsel, led the Mapleton Sailors back from a fourth quarter deficit to defeat the visiting McKenzie Eagles in a Mt. West League 8 man football game last Friday, Oct. 11. The Eagles, desperately seeking their first win of the 2013 season looked like they might have pulled off the upset only to have two brothers from Mapleton seal their fate otherwise. The Sailors tied the football game with 1:20 left in the game on Brody Ford’s 20 yd. run and went up by two on a pass completion from Ford to receiver Justin Schaaf. The Eagles had the ball and were moving down the field with a chance to win when Tucker Ford intercepted Eagle Quarterback Bailey Adam’s pass with 25 seconds left in the game, thwarting McKenzie’s attempted comeback. Adam’s, the Mt. West League’s leading quarterback in passing yards with current season totals of 859 yds. and 11 TDs, completed 14 of 19 attempts for 224 yds., three touchdowns and 1 interception versus the Sailors. Casey Mitchell, the Eagle’s iron-man, caught 6 Adam’s passes for 102 yds. and 1 TD. Alex Nastasiuk also caught 6 passes for 100 yds. and 1 TD, while Eric Huffman had 1 reception for 8 yds. and 1 score. Drew Hamlow caught 1 pass for 14 yds. Mitchell lead the Eagles rushing with 28 carries and 186 yds. Adams scrambled 14 times for an additional 168 yds. and scored 4 TDs on the ground. Huffman had 3 carries for 30 yds. Defensively, McKenzie was led by Adams with 11 total tackles, 6 solo, and the senior also recovered a Sailor fumble. Huffman recorded 10 tackles, 5 solo, while Mitchell had 9 tackles, 4 solo, with a fumble recovery. Jorden Smith had 6 total tackles and a fumble recovery. Dillon Garr and Nastasiuk each added 5 total tackles and Nastasiuk also sacked the Sailor’s quarterback twice. The Hamlow brothers, Drew and Chance, each had 3 total tackles and Brian Fleming recorded 2.


Sturgill Runs For McKenzie At Rock N River 5K Meet


Eagle Freshman Levi Sturgill represented McKenzie in the Rock N River 5K Cross Country Meet last Sat., Oct. 12, held at Elijah Bristow State Park and hosted by Pleasant Hill. Sturgill finished 58th out of 79 runners with a time of 21:55. McKenzie’s Brittany Bayer ran in the Junior Varsity 5K race and placed 24th in a time of 39:12.


Eagles Fly Over Warriors


The McKenzie Varsity Volleyball Team closed out its 2013 Mt. West League season with a victory on the road against the Siletz Valley Warriors on Monday, Oct. 15. The Eagles won three straight sets, 25-14, 25-6, and 25-21, and earned McKenzie the League’s second place finish behind undefeated Lowell. The team will enter the Mt. West League playoffs as the second seed. The Eagles will play third seed, Mapleton, at Junction City High School on Sat. Oct. 26, with an 11:00 am. start. McKenzie (14-2 in League, 18-5 overall) has scheduled a three-way match with Condon/Wheeler and Trinity Lutheran, in Bend, on Monday, Oct. 21, which will complete its non-league schedule. Against Siletz, Buggy Hiddleston led what Head Coach Dan Brenner termed as an All Team Effort with 9 kills, 4 aces, 4 digs, and 6 assists. Every Eagle player had a kill in the match and the team served a team total of 27 aces. Ayshia Seiler led that effort with 8 aces and 17 assists. Delphine Clark had a team high of 10 digs and added 4 aces. Makaila Hiddleston hit 5 kills with 3 aces and Katey Totten added 4 kills and 1 block. Clea Coach had the Eagles other block on the evening. Kailyn Ringler contributed 4 digs to the win.
