FINN ROCK: "It was a super cool experience," was the way McKenzie High junior Anna Reidmann reacted after seeing the Manzanita sculpture and the student artists who delivered it. "That branch represents standing through the fire - just keeping on. We lost a lot and they had similar stuff going on." Phoenix-Talent School District Superintendent Brent Barry said the idea developed from a realization that their area wasn't alone in being impacted by the wildfires of 2020. "It gives you a sense of the physical forces involved," he said. "You see cars up in trees and boulders the size of trucks strewn...

I‘m writing this to announce that I plan to run for seat 2 of the McKenzie Valley Wellness Board of Directors as a write-in candidate. After working at the McKenzie River Clinic from 2017-2021, I would like to continue to serve the community by supporting programs that promote wellness and ensuring that funding is used responsibly in our community. There have been many challenges for the organization since 2017. • McKenzie Sports Report - April 21

    Cliff Richardson|Apr 21, 2022

Remember When??? My how times fly when you're having fun!!!! Or, perhaps, you might say, “where in the heck has the time gone!!” So we're going to talk ten years past and well, in light of all our more recent, collective life events that do indeed seem a speck in time in the way back. One winter, athletics at McKenzie High School were heating up gymnasiums and headlining Sports pages around the State. The 2011-12 Eagle Varsity Girls Basketball team embraced the new season enthusiastically and you might say, sported a 'grudge' attitude. The...

  • Tawdry love triangle ended with sensational murder trial

    Finn J.D. John|Apr 21, 2022

On June 20, 1907, a retired military man named Charles Reynolds was hurrying home as fast as he could - with a .38-caliber revolver in his pocket. Charles was an old U.S. Cavalryman in his 50s who had moved to Portland with his wife, Lulu, and his two grown children from a previous marriage. Charles had married Lulu in Colorado five years before when she was just 25 years old. In Portland, the Reynoldses were part owners of a bathhouse on the corner of Second and Washington and lived in a large...

  • Be kind to your shrubs when you pick up pruners

    Kym Pokarny, OSU Extension|Apr 21, 2022

You've got clippers in hand, a shrub in mind and a gleam in your eye. It's pruning time. But do you have a plan? Before you clip a stem, know your shrub, said Neil Bell, horticulturist for Oregon State University's Extension Service. "What you want to focus on is flowering time and growth habit," he said. "Certain shrubs you can prune right about now; others you should wait until after they flower." Spring-blooming shrubs like forsythia, mock orange, flowering quince, deutzia and lilac, should...

When Douglas Himberger buys tickets on Vivid Seats to a Jerry Seinfeld show, he never imagines that the comedian would reschedule his performance three times because of the pandemic. Can he get a refund? I paid $689 for two seats to a Jerry Seinfeld show in Atlantic City through VividSeats in 2020. The show was originally scheduled for April, but because of the pandemic, they rescheduled for August and finally July 2021. That's over 18 months after we bought the tickets! I had planned to travel...

When Lufthansa cancels Raymond Menna's flight, it takes four months for a refund. But his wife's refund is still missing. How can he get his money back? Lufthansa canceled a flight for my wife and me from Orlando to Budapest via Frankfurt last year. The airline promised a full refund. Four months later, I received a refund for one of the tickets. I've been trying to get a refund for the second ticket. I have made numerous phone calls and sent emails. I've tried to talk to a superior and keep...

    Wayne and Tamara Mitchell|Apr 21, 2022

I am having a problem in paradise. First of all, I am 22, he is 31. We have known each other for a little over a month. At first, he was more affectionate than I was. He felt a little upset I wasn't moving as fast as he was affectionately. Not that he was trying to be sexual, he just wanted cuddling, hugging, and kissing. For some reason he thought we were "two different people." He was unsure whether we should even talk anymore. I didn't see that! We had a long debate, and everything was good a...
