After falling in love and getting married in 1978, she told me she wanted to publish a local paper that would include items about the area's history and personalities - and everything in between. As a result, McKenzie River Reflections was born on our dining room table and was printed on the big web press at the Springfield News. Much has hap...

Summer is in full swing and with that comes cookouts and gatherings where food is featured. As you plan your menu, keep local farmers in mind. Buying locally-produced food strengthens the local economy. According to the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, on average, every $100 spent at locally-owned businesses results in $45 flowing back into the local community. This is much higher than the $14 that stays in the community when we spend our $100 at a business that isn’t locally owned. More customers are now choosing to purchase their food from f...

  • Vanport residents built nearly half of US WWII aircraft carriers

    Finn J.D. John|Jul 14, 2022

During the first year of the Second World War, the conflict in the Pacific was all about aircraft carriers. With a carrier, one could take the fight to the enemy. Without one, one could only huddle on an island as a passive target, waiting for an enemy carrier's aircraft to arrive and attack. When the war broke out, the U.S. had seven of these precious warships, but only three were in the Pacific. They were the actual targets of the attack on Pearl Harbor - the Japanese knew if they could get...

  • Birds welcome variety that comes with backyard feeders

    Kym Pokorny, OSU Extension|Jul 14, 2022

Even in summer when there's plenty of sustenance from plants and insects, birds welcome the variety of seeds and nuts offered in bird feeders. When putting out a banquet of supplemental food, high quality is essential, said Dana Sanchez, a wildlife specialist for Oregon State University Extension Service. Finally, a year and a half later, the Rolling Stones rescheduled the show. My tickets were encrypted on a computer and made available to me a day before the performance. When I tried to...
