$2,000 signs stolen from Leaburg Hatchery
May 3, 2013
LEABURG: After a decade of weathering, the signs at the entrance driveway to the Leaburg Hatchery had been taken down. The signs laminated butcher block teak panels were refinished. But now they could be bobbing down the river or hanging in someone’s hideaway.
Leaburg Trout Hatchery manager Erik Withalm says last Thursday night or Friday morning someone made off with them - a 3 foot by 4 foot sign and a smaller 1 foot by 4 foot panel.
Unfortunately, it wasn’t an isolated incident. There have been other thefts in recent years. If the trend continues Withalm says that will be countered by installing gates at the facility to block public access except for daylight hours. “I know fishermen aren’t gong to like that but people will have to self-police and report any suspicious activity,” he said.
At this time officials aren’t sure if what occurred was a robbery or if a grudge could have caused someone to throw them off the dam. Anyone who has information to report can call the hatchery at 541-896-3294 or contact the Oregon State Police. Withalm is also soliciting funds to offer as a reward for leads in the case.
