Red Devils Repel Eagle Rally, Repeat 3-1 Victory

The McKenzie Eagles traveled to Lowell on Thursday, Sept. 26, fully intending to defeat and even the series with the Red Devils, thus earning a share of the Mt. West League lead. Instead, Lowell made it quite clear the Eagles understood who is in first place currently and who intends to stay there. The Red Devils won the match 3-1, the same score and outcome as the first match with the Eagles when the teams opened the 2013 season (Sept. 3). This time, McKenzie came out of the corner punching late in the first set after falling behind early to win 25-23. The second set started out much the same for the visitors as they fell behind early and needed a rally to make a game of it. This time Lowell persevered to win on a serving error, 25-23. The Eagles and the Red Devils typically engaged in a knock-down affair when they hook up and this one wasn’t any different as the third set was won by Lowell 25-21. Once again McKenzie took its time in establishing an attack. The host Devils decided at this point to send the Eagles home with a message, blasting the visitors in the fourth and deciding set by a score of 25-5. With the victory Lowell (10-0) stands alone in first place in the Mt. West League standings as the season turns the corner into the second half. Mapleton is currently in second place at 8-2 and the Eagles are a half game behind at 7-2. McKenzie was led by setter Ayshia Seiler with 24 assists, 18 digs, 5 aces, and 2 kills. Buggy Hiddleston led her team with 9 kills, had 10 digs, 2 blocks, and 3 aces. Shyla Harlan, Katey Totten, and Makaila Hiddleston all added 6 kills with Tamera Satchell hitting for 5 more. Totten also had 5 aces, 1 block and 3 digs. Harlan added 5 aces of her own and 9 digs. M. Hiddleston led her team with 3 blocks in the match and also contributed 10 digs. Satchell had 2 digs and Delphine Clark added 4 digs.

The Siletz Valley Warriors handed the visiting McKenzie Eagles their second Mt. West League defeat and fourth consecutive loss of the season last Friday, Sept. 27 at Siletz. Eagles senior quarterback Bailey Adams accounted for 16 pts. of McKenzie’s final score as he rushed 102 yds. on the ground, scoring two touchdowns and successfully converting two PATs. Adams also passed for 61 yds. completing 7 times in 29 attempts while giving up 2 interceptions. Senior Casey Mitchell was the Eagle’s leading ground-gainer as he accumulated 109 yds. on 20 carries. Eric Huffman rushed 6 times for an additional 12 yds. and caught 3 Adam’s passes for 34 yds. Alex Nastasiuk collected 3 passes as well for 18 yds. and Drew Hamlow hauled in 1 pass for 9 yds. Defensively, McKenzie was led by Mitchell who had 12 tackles, 7 solo, and he also had one sack. Nastasiuk was on par with his teammate as he had 6 solo tackles, 11 total. Adams earned 9 total tackles, 6 of which were solo, and Huffman had 5 tackles total, 2 solo. Huffman and Nastasiuk combined for 1 sack. McKenzie’s next Mt. West League opponent scheduled for Friday, Oct. 4 at home is the Triangle Lake Lakers (2-0, 4-0), who are currently ranked 3rd in the OSAA 1A Football poll. The Eagle’s defense will once again be tested as the Lakers are averaging 59.5 pts. a contest while holding their opponents to 17 pts. Kickoff is set for 7:00 pm. at Wade Thomas Field.

McKenzie’s final opponent was Mt. Buggy Hiddleston continued her fine day with 6 kills, 1 ace, 3 blocks, and 17 digs. Katey Totten hit for 9 kills, 2 aces, 3 blocks, and 8 digs and Shyla Harlan added 4 kills, an ace, and 14 digs. Delphine Clark earned 13 digs. Senior Ayshia Seiler had another fine match setting with 34 assists plus 1 ace and 5 digs. Head Coach Dan Brenner was very pleased with the level of competition at the annual Tournament and felt his team, albeit very tired, gained valuable experience as the Team heads into the second half of the regular season and post-season aspirations.
