McKenzie Varsity Sports Schedule This Week


There are no scheduled contests this week for either the McKenzie Boys or Girls Varsity Basketball teams.


Warriors Wrap-up Eagles in Winter Tournament


Both McKenzie Varsity Teams were routed recently by host North Douglas in the opening round of the North Douglas Winter Tournament.

The Eagle Girls were pounded by the OSAA #1 ranked Warriors, 60-22. McKenzie’s Jorden Smith was the Eagle’s leading scorer with 8 pts. North Douglas was paced by sophomore guard Kalli Frieze, who scored 18 pts.

The McKenzie Varsity Boys team were easily dispatched by OSAA #30 ranked North Douglas, losing 53-14. Chance Hamlow led his Eagle teammates with 6 pts. scored. North Douglas senior Kyle Gilmore was the game’s top scorer with 15 pts., shooting a perfect 5 for 5 from the field.


Eagles Experience Elk Stampede


Elkton was the McKenzie Girls Varsity’s consolation round opponent at the North Douglas Winter Tournament last Saturday, December 20. The Elks lost their opening contest to Oakland, 51-29, but found their game and handed the Mt. West League visiting Eagles a 49-33 defeat.

McKenzie’s Katey Totten scored 11 pts. in the contest. Elkton (4-4) is ranked 15th in the latest OSAA State Rankings and McKenzie (3-5) dropped to 27th.

McKenzie Head Coach Galen Scrivner’s team fared none the better against the Elks in their consolation game, losing 53-30.

The Elkton boys (3-5), lost to class 2A Oakland on Friday, 68-26, and are currently ranked 50th, while the Eagles (2-7) dropped to 63rd in OSAA State rankings.


McKenzie Hoops Returns to 1A Hoops Classic


The McKenzie Varsity Basketball teams travel north to the Big City, Portland, and will participate with seven other class 1A teams from around the State of Oregon in the annual 1A Hoops Classic. Portland Lutheran will again host the Classic on Monday, December 29, through Wednesday, December 31.

McKenzie’s opponent for both the Girls and Boys teams will be Condon/Wheeler. The Knights defeated both Eagle teams recently in the Condon/Wheeler Tournament. The Eagle girls team is scheduled with the Knights on Monday at Noon and the Boys follow at 1:30 pm.

Other teams entered in the Classic on the Boys bracket are host Portland Lutheran, Triangle Lake, Dufur, Hosanna Christian, Crosshill Christian, and Pacific. Hosanna Christian enters the tournament currently ranked 3rd in the latest OSAA State rankings. Dufur isn’t far behind ranked 5th, and Crosshill Christian enters with a 10th ranking.

The Girls bracket is highlighted by Condon/Wheeler with a 6th State ranking and Southwest Christian, ranked 16th. Other teams vying for the Girls Championship Trophy in the Classic are Falls City/Kings Valley Charter, Hosanna Christian, Dufur, Triangle Lake, and host Portland Lutheran.
