Scott Lake Fire update

Fire near Scott Lake now contained at 1 acre

A fire raised its smoky head this afternoon on the steep slopes above Highway 242 near Scott Lake. The fire was called in nearly simultaneously by two Lookouts and a recreation visitor on South Sister. The response to the fire was swift and complete, within a few hours of attack the fire is now (at 5 p.m.) just smoldering and there is a line completely around the impacted area.

“Because the fire was so close to Highway 242, and because that road is so steep and narrow, we requested that ODOT temporarily close the Highway. We’re grateful to their swift response and now that the bulk of the firefighting effort is done, the Highway has been re-opened,” said District Ranger Terry Baker.

Tonight, firefighters will staff the fire area, ensuring that any remaining hot spots are put out immediately. “We don’t anticipate any more trouble with this fire, but we are going to patrol the area as long as needed to ensure that this area is safe for visitors,” commented Baker.
