When the Ballots Come Calling, Be Ready to Answer

With the May 19, 2026 Primary Election approaching, Lane County officials are encouraging residents to make sure they are registered to vote and that their information is up to date ahead of the April 28 deadline.

The Lane County Elections Office is reminding voters that Oregon operates under a closed primary system. While all registered voters may cast ballots on local issues and nonpartisan races, only those affiliated with a political party can vote for that party’s candidates in the primary election. As a result, officials stress the importance of confirming or updating party registration before the cutoff date.

“We want all people who are eligible to vote ready to participate in the May Primary election,” said Lane County Clerk Tommy Gong. “So, it’s really important to get registered by the April 28 deadline. For voters who are already registered, it’s a good idea to confirm or update your party affiliation, as well.”

Voter registration or party changes must be completed by April 28. Forms delivered in person must arrive at the Elections Office, located at 275 W. 10th Ave. in Eugene, by 5 p.m. that day. Mailed forms must be postmarked by April 28, and online registrations must be submitted by 11:59 p.m.

Ballots for the election will begin mailing to voters on May 1. To track the status of a ballot, visit www.oregonvotes.gov/MyVote.

Completed ballots may be returned by mail, deposited in official ballot drop boxes, or delivered directly to the Elections Office.
