ART TALK
This weekend’s ART TALK at the O’Brien Memorial Library, 51771 Blue River Drive, will feature Pop Artist Roger Canady, who will be sharing his paintings and story from 2 – 3 pm on May 2.
Roger was born in Taft, a small oil field town in California, and has a three generation connection to the oil industry.
After 40 years as a Petroleum Landman (leasing land to drill oil wells) he worked for Chevron, Sun Oil, Union Oil and various independents, before relocating to McKenzie Bridge.
He admits he took an art class in high school “only because there were cute girls in it.” Roger has always loved pop art – including favorites Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstine, Mel Ramos and Shepard Fairey who he’s been collecting for the last 10 years. While carrying for his wife he would sketch ideas at night and paint them the next day. The result is about 120 paintings, with several sold, and about 50 given to friends and family.
Roger’s work will displayed on the Gallery Wall until mid June. Bring a friend on Saturday and enjoy some light refreshments while listening to Roger’s presentation.
Something Rotten Jr.
On May 3rd at 2 pm, the Rose Children’s Theatre at Springfield’s Wildish Community Theater, 630 Main Street, will present Something Rotten Jr., a hilarious musical comedy about two brothers determined to write the world’s very first musical.
Set in the 1590s, brothers Nick and Nigel Bottom are desperate to write a hit play-but they live in the shadow of the Renaissance rock star known as “The Bard.” When a local soothsayer predicts that the future of theatre involves singing, dancing, and acting all at the same time, the Bottom brothers set out to create the world’s first musical.
Amid the chaos and excitement of opening night, they discover that success comes from staying true to yourself… and all that jazz.
Something Rotten Jr. features big song-and-dance numbers and a wacky cast of over-the-top characters, each with their own moment to shine.
Patrons arriving late will be seated at the nearest possible break in the performance by an usher.
Cinco de Mayo
Next Tuesday, May 5th, at 5 pm, the Upper McKenzie Community Center, will be the place to be for a fun Mexican themed potluck party and celebrate Cinco de Mayo.
People probably won’t be arriving to celebrate Mexico’s 1862 victory over invading French forces but if you bring some carne asada tacos, enchiladas, guacamole, rice or refried beans to share you’re sure to be welcome.
Plan to partake in great food and conversations. And, for those who haven’t heard, the McKenzie Watershed Council will share details on some of their projects right in our backyards.
It’s all set to happen at 54745 McKenzie River Drive in Rainbow.
