Barn Destroyed by Fire

McKenzie and Mohawk responded

McKenzie Fire & Rescue and Mohawk Valley Rural Fire District crews responded to a 1:54 a.m. structure fire on October 8 that destroyed a large barn, despite a coordinated response involving 22 emergency personnel and 10 pieces of firefighting apparatus.

The approximately 40-by-40-foot barn, covering 1,600 square feet, was declared a total loss.

Firefighters from both districts responded under an automatic mutual aid agreement, which allows neighboring fire agencies to provide immediate assistance during emergencies requiring additional personnel and equipment.

Personnel from the Lane County Sheriff’s Office and Oregon Department of Forestry also provided assistance during the incident.

Officials said the response demonstrated the importance of cooperation among rural emergency service agencies, where large structure fires can require resources beyond those available from a single fire district.

The cause of the fire or the estimated dollar value of the loss hasn’t been determined.
