State Playoffs

The Mt. West League drought at the OSAA State Quarterfinals continues as the entire League’s representatives were defeated last week in First and Second Round action. It’s been ten seasons since a MWL team has qualified for the Quarterfinals/State Championships held in Baker City annually. The 2016 MWL Champion Siletz Valley Boys team defeated South Wasco County in the Round 2 to advance to Baker City, where they were defeated by Sherman in the Quarterfinals and Hosanna Christian in the Consolation to end their season.

It’s been longer for a MWL Girls team to make the trip east. The McKenzie Eagles made the grade last for the MWL at Baker City, eleven years past, back in 2015. The Eagles also went 2 and out, losing to North Douglas in the Quarterfinals and again to Elkton in Consolation.

Last season, Eddyville Charter was the sole MWL team to advance to Round 2 action. This season, the MWL’s Girls Champion 16th ranked Mapleton, defeated their Round 1 opponent, 17th ranked St. Paul, 53-44. With the victory, the Sailors advanced to Round 2, but unfortunately had to travel to top ranked Imbler, where the Panthers put a quick end to Mapleton’s, 19-6, post season aspirations, rolling over the visitors, 63-35.

The Mohawk Girls, 20-6 and ranked 22nd, suffered a worse Round 1 defeat, down south, at 11th ranked North Douglas, where the Warriors defeated them 62-20. The MWL third place, 23rd ranked Alsea Wolverines, 19-8, finished their season at 10th ranked Union, with a 51-25 loss Round 1 loss.

The 2026 OSAA/OnPoint Community Credit Union 1A Boys and Girls Basketball State Championships Quarterfinal Brackets are set. Eight Boys teams and eight Girls teams are still standing after Round 1 and 2 playoff action and if you listen carefully, you’ll hear “Baker City or Bust” from all corners of the State, as the finalists and their respective Schools and Communities migrate East. It’s a hard earned privilege and honor to make that trip and participate in the Tournament and the Baker City Folks know how to host a top rate experience.
