Savannah BBall
The Savannah Bananas and the Party Animals will meet in a pair of games in Autzen Stadium this Saturday at 5 pm and Sunday at 1 pm.
Their “Banana Ball” faceoffs are an entertaining, fan-focused variation of baseball played by the Savannah Bananas and their associated teams. They started the sport in 2016 with the goal of making baseball more entertaining to a broader audience. Fan involvement is a key component in Banana Ball which includes spectators recording outs when catching a foul ball.
The matches have a set of unique rules that include batters stealing first base – with no walks allowed – and batters being required to run on a ball in the dirt. The experience goes beyond the game itself, with players in unique uniforms and a festive atmosphere with a strict two-hour time limit.
The Savannah Bananas played games in 40 cities last year. Their first NFL stadium game was at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa, Fla., where they played in front of a sold-out crowd of 65,000. On April 26, the Bananas and the Party Animals played a game in front of 81,000 people at Clemson University’s Memorial Stadium.
McKenzie Airstrip
Fire season is starting early this year. Helicopters are already being staged at a couple of Oregon Department of Aviation airports, including the Chiloquin State Airport and McKenzie Bridge State Airport. ODA has closed the McKenzie Bridge State Airport – except for firefighting aircraft – until July 8.
In addition, the Oakridge State Airport was closed on June 1 for a reconstruction project to provide a new runway and taxiway, improved pavement and shoulder grading, and new supplemental solar lighted windcones. The runway will be stronger, and new concrete stands will be included to better support heavy firefighting aircraft and support equipment.
Closures can end early or be extended, so the department encourages pilots, dispatchers, and aviation personnel to check Notice to Air Missions (NOTAMs) for the latest closure and other pertinent information alerts about abnormal, temporary, or unexpected conditions that could affect the safety or efficiency of a flight.
