McKenzie Varsity Sports Schedule This Week

The Varsity Basketball teams travel to Mohawk on Tuesday, January 28, with the Girls team scheduled for a 5:30 pm. tip-off and the Boys team starting at 7:00 pm. Both teams will host Eddyville Charter on Friday, January 31 with the Girls starting at 5:30 pm. and the Boys following at 7:00 pm. The Eagle Varsity Wrestling team travels on Wednesday, January 29, to compete in the Myrtle Point/Powers Dual Meet with the host, Oakland, and Crow. First match is scheduled for 5:00 pm. The team next travels to Monroe on Saturday, February 1, to participate in the Monroe Wrestling Tournament. Match times begin at 9:00 am.

McKenzie Wrestlers Compete at Triangle Lake

McKenzie’s Varsity Wrestling Team participated at the Triangle Lake Invite Wrestling Tournament, Saturday, January 18. Teams from Crow, Mohawk, Triangle Lake and McKenzie were represented. Senior Eagle wrestler Lane Kruse, wrestling in the 138 lb. weight class, won his first match by major decision, 14-5, over Crow wrestler Teancum Jentzsch. Kruse dropped his second match in an 8-2 decision to Clay Drago of Crow. Freshman Levi Sturgill lost his first 145 lb. weight class match in a 6-3 decision to Jerry Trejo of Mohawk. Sturgill regrouped to pin his second opponent, Triangle Lake’s Sarah Walton. In the 152 lb. weight class, senior Casey Mitchell dropped his first match in a 5-2 decision to Mohawk’s Austin Bigbee. Mitchell won his second match of the day with an 8-4 decision over Ryan Drago of Triangle Lake but lost his final match of the meet by pin to Keith Phillips of Crow. The Eagle’s 195 lb. weight class wrestler, Dylan Garr, lost a pair of matches, both by pins to two Crow wrestlers, Samuel Jentzsch and Trenton Clark.

Eagle Girls Defeat Siletz Valley Charter, 30-12

McKenzie’s Varsity Girls Basketball team won on the road, last Tuesday, January 21, and remained in the hunt for the Mt. West League Title. League leader Triangle Lake also won, defeating Mapleton 68-11. Lowell also stayed in the chase beating Eddyville Charter 82-36. The remainder of the regular season should prove interesting as these three teams battle down to the wire. McKenzie led 19-2 at halftime and Head Coach David Duncan was able to give his bench ample playing time during the balance of the game. The score was 26-5 at the end of the third quarter and the Warriors outscored the Eagles 7-4 in the final period. Against the Warriors, Makaila Hiddleston scored 12 pts. and recorded 2 steals. Shyla Harlan added 10 pts., 2 assists and a steal. Jorden Smith scored 3 pts. along with 6 rebounds and 4 steals. Aly Mathews tallied 2 pts. and had 1 steal and Buggy Hiddleston grabbed 3 rebounds and added 3 steals. Katey Totten’s game line was quite long as she scored 1 pt., had 3 assists, 3 rebounds, 3 steals, and the Eagle’s only blocked shot. Kailyn Ringler scored 2 pts., grabbed 5 rebounds and stole the ball once and Miyanna Hayes added 3 rebounds.

Warriors Extend Eagle’s Woes

The host Siletz Valley Charter Warriors may have one of the youngest Varsity Boys Basketball rosters in 1A basketball currently. With only 2 seniors and 2 juniors listed, the rest of the Warrior’s roster is filled with 6 sophomores. Siletz Valley Charter’s Head Coach David Morgan is surely pleased with his youthful team this current season and the potential opportunities down the road for at least a couple of seasons. Following the 55-32 dismantling of the visiting McKenzie Eagles, Siletz Valley Charter found itself in second place behind League leader Triangle Lake Charter. The loss for the Eagles was their 15th consecutive.

McKenzie Wallops Mapleton

The Eagle Varsity Girls overwhelmed the visiting Sailors of Mapleton, 42-7, on Friday, January 24. McKenzie outscored Mapleton 16-3 in the first quarter and took a 26-3 lead into the locker-room at the halftime break. The Eagles held a 39-5 advantage at the end of the third quarter. Makaila Hiddleston led all scorers in the game with 11 pts. and also led with 7 rebounds. Additionally, Hiddleston stole the ball 5 times and had a blocked shot. Shyla Harlan confounded the Sailor offense all night as she led her team with 7 steals, (the Eagles had 23 steals total in the game), while scoring 10 pts. and securing 4 rebounds. Buggy Hiddleston scored 10 pts., grabbed 3 rebounds, and added a steal. Katey Totten scored eight pts., 3 rebounds, and 3 steals. Jorden Smith also created havoc on the Sailor offense as she had 6 steals to go with 2 pts., and 3 rebounds. Aly Mathews added 4 rebounds and Kailyn Ringler contributed with 1 rebound, 1 steal, and 1 blocked shot. The Eagles shot 33% from the field and committed 17 turnovers in the contest.

Eagles Stop Skid, Get Win over Sailors

McKenzie’s Boys Varsity Basketball team earned a much appreciated win, beating the visiting Mapleton Sailors 33-23. Against the Sailors, senior Eagle Bailey Adams led his team with 15 pts. and 13 rebounds.

Eagle Ladies Coast to Victory Over Eddyville

McKenzie defeated Eddyville 45-17 and improved to 9-2 in Mt. West League play and 16-3 overall to move into a second place tie with Lowell. Triangle Lake leads the League standings at 10-1 and with the regular season closing in a couple of weeks, the Lakers may have the inside track to the League Title. Triangle Lake defeated McKenzie in both of their League match-ups and defeated Lowell, 57-42, last Friday. The Lakers will be heavily favored to win out the rest of their League schedule. As for the Eagles and the Red Devils, the two teams play their final regular season game at McKenzie on February 4 and the contest should determine who finishes in second place. Against Eddyville, senior Makaila Hiddleston with 12 pts., 1 rebound, 1 assist, and a steal led the fourth ranked Eagles. Fellow senior Shyla Harlan distributed the ball well for the Eagle offense as she led the team with 9 assists. Harlan also scored 11 pts, hauled in 4 rebounds, and had 5 steals. Buggy Hiddleston likewise scored in double figures with 10 pts., added 4 rebounds and a steal. Point guard Jorden Smith was tenacious on defense as she led her team with 7 steals, scored 2 pts., added 4 rebounds and handed out 5 assists. Katey Totten tallied 6 pts., had a rebound, 2 assists, and 2 steals. Kailyn Ringler scored 4 pts., had 1 rebound, an assist and a steal. Aly Mathews grabbed 2 rebounds and an assist, Isabella Espinoza had a rebound and 1 steal, and Miyanna Hayes added a rebound and as assist. McKenzie shot 50% from the field.

McKenzie Boys Roll Doubles As Adams Tears It Up

The Eagles took a road trip to Eddyville last Saturday, January 25 and dispersed a double whammy to the host team, defeating Eddyville 48-15, and winning it’s second consecutive game for the first time this season since opening the season with two victories over Mapleton and Mohawk. McKenzie was led by Bailey Adam’s outstanding night on the hardwoods as he earned his first career triple double, scoring 31 pts., hauling in 16 rebounds, and recording 10 steals. With the Indians of Mohawk (0-10) and the Coast Range Eagles of Eddyville (1-10) scheduled for McKenzie’s next two contests, the Eagles will be looking to extend their win streak. Triangle Lake (11-0) and 4th ranked in the latest OSAA State 1A rankings currently leads the League and has the advantage to secure the League Title. The Lakers are scheduled for a showdown at Siletz Valley Charter (10-1) on February 11 with the second place Warriors. Triangle Lake defeated Siletz 66-59 in their earlier meeting. Lowell (8-3) is solid in third place; Crow (6-4) currently sits in fourth with Alsea (5-5), McKenzie (4-7), Mapleton (3-8), Eddyville and Mohawk rounding out the balance of the League standings.
